On Saturday June 5th (after multiple delays due to lockdown) TTRC was finally able to get out on a gorgeous sunny-day and spend a couple hours cleaning up some of the garbage that lay along the Don Valley bike path from Dundas and Lakeshore.
Four TTRC members (President-elect Aby, Secretary Kelsey, Past-President Nick, and newest member Andreas), along with 3 guests and a canine companion, walked up and down the area for a few hot afternoon hours and gathered 8 bags of garbage (so many cigarette butts). Thank you to Kelsey for organizing!
Waste clean-ups remove non-organic materials from natural areas such as shorelines, parks, trails, and smaller waterways such as rivers and lake tributaries.
- Prevents litter from potentially leaching into the ground and waterway
- Helps avoid animal consumption of non-organic toxic items
- Plastics are a key problem and all ocean basins are contaminated with plastic debris; 80% of which derives from land-based sources that are transported to the ocean by wind and adjoining waterways (like the Great Lakes)
- Educates participants and community, and encourages positive behaviours around Environmental Sustainability
